buffs are usually provided by qte's (when icons are lighting up, you can activate qte and your standby members can provide buffs for character on field. except for attackers, they don't have any buffs). buffs also provided by specific memories which you can set into characters. there are some other sources of buffs but i don't recommend to delve into this so deeply as a newcomer because your brain will blow up and you need to have some specific units to understand what they can do and how to utilize them effectively. just theory can not work, you need to practice too.
