Or if you don't just mean top down RPG, then I'd check out Gestalt/Reincarnation (same game), Nier Automata (a sequel, not as beak in tone, but it can get dark, especially once you find out what's going on with the "robots"), Bloodborne, and the Dark Souls series.

Dark Souls is probably what you are looking for the most in terms of dark is the best path over light

I guess for that matter you can add Hollow Knight to the list, although that's more of an action platformer than an RPG, but it fits the tone well.

The actual RPG games though that I listed can get pretty dark, just a warning
