Originally, it was meant to be called "Thunderbolt" until people famously calling this CAS "Warthog".

Warthog was just an aggressive name giving to an aircraft with a shark mouth. This is just the same as the P-47 where the Americans called it "Thunderbolt" and "Jug", typically have two nicknames but it's main nickname is the Thunderbolt just like the A-10. For example, the F-16 Falcon (official nickname) but many called it Viper (fanmade nickname). Also the B-52 is called "BUFF" (BIG UGLY FAT FUCKER).

But if you didn't know A-10 is giving the nickname Thunderbolt with a "II", because it's honor for the American Fighter-bomber aircraft "P-47".
