If powerful enough they may also be used more than just once, in that scenario we refer to it's amount of charges which generally varies from one to five.
Alternatively auxilium can be fed to a spell in the middle of casting as to vastly improve it's overall attributes. This dangerous usage of auxilium is not without its own set of consequences as the user's mana reserves are proportionally depleted.

Auxilium forms naturally in Ethereal Regions, places where the mana is most dense, such as Mt. Blackfuse. This is a rare occurrence, taking centuries for the mana to crystallize into auxilium. However, auxilium found in magic shops are artificially produced.

Lucius Orlandor Astatine is the being to have uncovered the secrets of auxilium and managed to artificially produce it in quantities. It was never figured out if natural auxilium had any appreciable difference in usage and power from artificial auxilium since, after him, there wasn't anything more anyone could find out about auxilium.
Natural auxilium forms by crystallization when magic particles present in the atmosphere becomes too densely packed. When this happen begins the crystallization of magic particles into auxilium. The element of the auxilium is relative to the Ethereal Region it came from.
Artificial auxilium forms when artificially recreating conditions necessary for the formation of auxilium. Since generally powerful mages have no use in working for this cheap industry it is the weaker mages struggling to find decent jobs that cope for them. Approximatively 100 mages are necessary to simulate the conditions necessary for the formation of auxilium and generally it takes up to a month for even just one auxilium to form.
