Yeah I'm kind of an history nerd either, therefore, I can be critical when a show or movie fails to provide good historical content even if, I know, azur lane is supposed to be sci fi.

Even kancolle felt more believable lore wise in the anime than azur lane XD

Basically, its an anime with mechs who are representations in the lore, of IRL aircrafts such as the F-4 phantom, to the Mig 21, and other aircrafts.
They are called TSF: Tactical surface fighters, and they fight an alien force called the BETA's (now I don't remember their full name but that's how they are referred to)
And basically, half the world is fucked and overrun by these large creatures who doesn't even use technology to overwhelm humanity, just raw numbers and basically fucked up variants of their species.

But yeah, the anime revolves around that, the United nations being fucked, the Soviet union still in one piece but being fucked.
And lastly but not least, terrorists near the end trying to fuck the UN even more.

All in all in about 24-26 episodes

But, basically, that's the entire's show's plot hole

and you got another called schwarzesmarken, 12 episodes, and serves as a prequel
