That's a bit different. When it comes to server stability, MMOs make a stress test. Very short duration, everyone can join. Because of the short window they want more concurrent people in to actually test how it goes.
Closed betas were initially meant to reduce the cost QA testing, but basically getting people to work it for free.
Open betas were popularised by MMOs, because there you generally need a lot more people to test the economy and whatnot properly. You can't just scale up the data from a smaller sample.

Now both are just marketing stunts.

Afaik, Hibiki, Iroha, Iori, Ako, Himari are good pulls. Iroha looks like outclassed Hibiki in PvE department. I don't have her to test. Yet I have Hibiki and no complaints still.
