Well... I'm no biologist, and especially not an evolutionary biologist, but... usually living in and of itself produces energy in a myriad of forms. Human body? Produces heat, electricity, kinetic force, etc... to just give one example.

Water, the minerals in the soil, sunlight to do their photsynthesis, etc...

So, if some alien were, somehow, to be a silicate-based life form, i.e. a living rock of sorts, I'm pretty sure even those guys would need their own form of nutrition, be it radiation (there are a specific species of moss and mushrooms here on Earth that nourish themselves on radiation ), solar energy, "eating" rocks, Lord knows what else...
