Then you didn't play Automata then. Machines have been copying humans for a long time and although they are by nature genderless, most of them show actions or say something that would allude to them identifying as either male or female.

When you visit Pascal's town and all the other machines' who have disconnected from the hivemind, Pascal explains his role in it and what he does. He then says that even though he has a female voice, he identifies as male. The female voice is so that the child machines are soothed by him.

If you're in it to understand the whole story, then Nier may be a bit daunting. Since Nier's story starts in the PS1 games, Drakengard. Technically, you don't need to play them to understand each individual story but all Nier and Drakengard games (except for Drakengard 2) are connected.

Yakuza is pretty straightforward. Start from 0 then Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3 and so on.
