I've played Lancer and, uh... it personally didn't work for me, tbh.

While it may call itself a roleplaying game, it's more of a game that cannot decided whether it wants to be an actual TTRPG or a wargame trying its darndest to imitate Battletech when it comes to the gameplay.

Also, addendum to my opinion on Lancer: Quite frankly, the way the action system is presented just confused me... maybe it's because some rules specifications were a bit over the place in the chapter covering the whole deal (or maybe not, it's been more than a year since I touched this game), but I just remember it all not being presented in an easy-to-follow manner.

And that's coming from someone who enjoys the freaking Palladium Books system.

Oh, also, your pilot doesn't matter rules-wise. Ain't no passive or active bonuses/buffs/effects you can give them that'd give your mech bonuses. No, the only way you play pilot-level stuff is a purely fluffy narrative system, in contrast to the crunchy mech combat.

Isn't that kinda lame? I mean, in mecha shows, the pilot is just as important as the mecha he pilots. And the pilot's skills and quirks usually play a role in how well they pilot their mecha and how well they do in battle with their fellow pilots.

Please ignore this last part, I remembered wrong. There are in fact PC skills and they have an effect on gameplay.

If you’re talking about Shirou, he was the best member of his archery club and that would serve as Archer’s base for his bow and sword-arrows.
The Shirou we see is like… basically a base form pokemon, while Archer is the final evolution. And there’s a mid evolution between the two.

(Anyway, don't mind me, gonna continue hashing out my theoretical space opera gacha game idea. Feel free to ask questions or even give input if the creative bug's bitten you.)

So, for the characters, you'd have PGR-esque gameplay. and a similar character progression system, but, the characters would also have benefic passive effects for the ships you crew them with. And yes, those passive effects would improve/grow as you evolve the character, but the main goal of the function would be that even if you have characters you haven't invested a lot in, they'd still be useful and wouldn't just be eating up space in your character pool.

Spaceship gameplay would honestly be more along the lines of a rail shooter. Though some Ace Combat-esque gameplay could also be added. (I.e. dogfights in a large, but still limited location.)

The big question is though: What's the backdrop of all of this? After all, gameplay is nice, but nowadays, most video games, and especially gacha games, tell some kind of story,
My main idea is: You're the (unwilling) leader of a rundown colony ship, said colony ship having had a cryogenics problem. Said problem made it so that everyone got unfrozen about 3000 years after the ship was launched for a (first? second? Dunno.) wave of colonisations from the homeworld. And hoo Lord, things have changed quite a bit in the local neighborhood of the galaxy.
Because what was originally a rather well-united solar system taking its first steps outside of home territory, turned into a decently spread star empire in 2000 years. However, after those 2 millenia, things started going down the drain. And now, 1000 years later, you've got several larger and smaller space nations trying to claim their part of the territory of the defunct star empire.
And all that chaos has let space piracy and other nasties rise up in power again too.

Now, your (customisable and playable) character is just trying to keep the colony ship safe. Finding a new home would be nice too.

Alrighty, continuing with the idea: Enemy variety-wise, the different new factions in the setting (as well as the different pirate groups) would allow us/the devs/creators to draw from different tropes of science fiction.

Do you want an enemy faction that's composed of transhumanist mind-uploaded people? Not a problem, we'll call them the Ascended Irodian Union. (Because their capital world's called Irodia.)

You want an enemy faction of mutants who wouldn't look out of place in Fallout or some 90s kids cartoon? Those guys's homeworld was a penal colony in the past on an irradiated planet. And now, they're chasing after our heroes because the colony ship is fully of humans with "pure" and unchanged original human genetic stock.

Do you want a cyberpunk-themed faction? Say hello to the local multi-stellar megacorp!

If you don't have psionic potential, but absolutely want to become a psionic? Sign here, here, and here, and now you're a guinea pig for some shadowy governmental or non-governmental organisation that'll try and turn you into a psychic through all kinds of experiments and projects.
