The Brits, as always suffering from NIH syndrome, thought they had a better( and bigger) cartridge, the .280. No matter it was untried and heavier, thus limiting the amount of rounds a grunt could carry. No matter that the rifle that it was intended for was a POS.

No, extensive post-war battle analysis showed that many, many thousands of rounds were fired in combat for every single casualty, showing that most soldiers couldn’t hit anything. Data also showed that the vast majority of engagements were under 100 yards, so the big, hard-hitting, long range, heavy recoiling battle rifle was a waste of ammo.

What was learned was that the Germans had the right idea, but kinda late, with their intermediate 9 mm. Kurz round, coupled with the STG 44 assault rifle. The Soviets were on the right track too, with the PPSH 41 series of submachine gun, effectively trading firepower for range.
