i use the thirds method in addition to some of the standard anatomy rules, some of which might not always apply but for the basics like the inside corner of the eyes should line up with the outside corners of the nose, the ends of the lips should line up around the middle of the eyes, and usually there's not a whole lot of chin space under the mouth, especially when the reference's head is tilted down!
#How to draw from reference

i can send some references in a moment, let me sketch something up quickly!
okay this is super rough but you can see the guidelines i used here, you can draw these on your references as well to get a feel for how it should look
Yeah but I just never know what to do afterwards, and when I do features they never look like the persons
maybe try drawing out their features separately without the head shape so you don't have to worry about the sizing or position, just the shape and look of them
I think features are my problems after the jaw and stuff
like the eyes and mouth? or hair?
Just everything
i would say tackle one thing at a time, maybe make an art diary on here and focus solely on drawing straight from references, but don't feel pressured to draw it all, if you just like the eyes from one reference draw that, if you like the mouth from another draw that. that way you can get yourself more familiar with the different shapes and positions of things on different people!
i'd be happy to follow along and give any feedback i can
#1480831409194008658 Is my art diary
great, i'll follow it 👍
Ofc!! U can scroll up too that’s where I’ve done more references
okay!!
Personally the Loomis method and breaking down the measurements don't help at all for me, the way I think of it is kind of weird and abstract but there's some chance it might help you so I'll share it here.
I think of the face less as a "face" and more as "3d model of a face"
This might make no sense at all, but for me it helps me disconnect from the "symbol drawing" mode and shift into drawing what I'm seeing rather than what my brain is telling me I'm seeing (so rather than "draw a picture of an eye on this face" for example it's just "put the light and shadow in the spot where it is on the 3d model")
Right now what you're doing is just drawing a face shape (flat) and putting pictures of the features (flat) on top of the face shape
I think you should start w some forward facing studies first
Could you provide references
I still don’t know what you mean, could you show images to help
its good to keep loomis , riley method, and the 1/3rd measurements people were talking about in your pocket as a tool. But I wouldn't start drawing a head with it. im in the middle of the 100 head challenge, and through that found a nice method that works for me. starting from a basic shape like a circle, square and adding the mouth and eyes first works best for me, because the mouth placement dictates the chin and jaw size while the eyes dictate how big the midface/nose area is. simplify your process down to something simple like this and keep studying and eventually things will click and you wont have to draw the loomis head every time
heres another method if you're tired of trying loomis
Everyone keeps deflecting Loomis Method onto me. I’ve said it doesn’t work I don’t see why I should try again if it’s not the method I am comfortable with
Everyone please read from here.
I never said to use loomis method tho
And the picture I posted wasn’t the loomis method either
🤷♂️
Like I was saying In my post, the loomis method also doesn’t work for me
if you're just trying to copy the portrait 1 to 1 then the traditional method would be the grid method
You said it’s good to keep Loomis
You’re deflecting it onto me
Oohh tyyy
i'm keeping it in the backyard shed where it belongs
Lmaoooo I feel you
?
i gave you two other methods aside from loomis, but all you read was the first sentence and complained
