how do I improve my shading/coloring

I feel like it looks boring not much style to it in comparison to some other stuff

these examples are pretty different, but it seems like you favor a. hard shading and b. high contrast lighting?
^thats really the crux of improving your coloring: pick out the elements you like, figure out why they work, and then apply that to your own artwork

I think Im leaning to the left image more but I think both aren't done in grayscale, just traditional color which I struggle with
