I keep getting stuck hating my art and I don’t know how to get better at it. I try to practice, but I feel as though I am not making any headway. If you have any tips please share. 💕

The first is a picture of one of my better pictures (I don’t have any of it finished at the moment). And the next 2 are pretty good. I don’t usually take pictures of the ones I don’t like.

whats your method of practicing? :0

#

like how do you go about learning to draw better

I honestly don’t really know and that’s one of the major problems of why I’m not progressing. I try to watch videos and have references, but I’m not really sure 🙁

or is it just learning as you go sort of thing

A little bit of both, like if I want to draw a body or something I will usually watch a video on that, but a lot of time it’s just as I go
If that makes any sense

i think for starters, you need a goal to work towards. improving in art isn't very linear or apparent most of the time, and thats bc improving in art is more so i guess

improving both muscle memory and the way you look at art

when you try to practice aimlessly, youre not really giving yourself an end result to achieve, just that it looks, vaguely "better", which is subjective

you need objective goals to work towards, whether it be learning how to draw better hands, how to render a ball, how to draw squares in different perspectives, etc

#

for example, rn i'm wanting to draw cats better, but that can mean hundreds of things, and different people see different good and bad qualities about my art

#

so ive set an achieveable goal for myself which is to learn the anatomy of the head, so i can then flow into learning facial expressions and putting my own artistic spin on it

#

ive also found that letting go of this idea of making art look "better" and instead just, doing whatever u want actually ends up with better results, but thats a personal experience, it doesn't apply to everyone. when i let go of this idea that i needed to "perfect" my art, i kept getting stuck in corners because i didnt know what being "perfect" even meant to begin with. i was aimless

but when i allowed myself freedom to experiment (like using different brushes, shading a different way) it opened more paths to me that i could pursue

@frank locust But ya I mean anatomy

frank locust
#

ok for anatomy theres aa few directions you can take thaat

#

if you are a facial expression kind of person, you could praactice that- theres a lot of emoji bases that have very wildly animated facial expressions u can copy for practice

there's also learning about the skull and muscles of the face to learn facial anatomy

you could learn line of action for the body overall, to make broad gestures for postures and whatnot

can aalso learn the anatomy of a certain part of a body!

#

u just gotta pick one and go from there

#

also unfortunately i know nothing bout watercolor so thaat might be a separate help thread when u get there
