#Hair rendering style

Hi there, I'm a digital artist with a style focused on dynamic lighting and heavy rendering of the painterly, rougher anime style.

My question is, how do I get my hair rendering to look more like Dino_Illus? Or, how do I get my hair rendering to look more interesting and more into the rough, painterly look?

From my observations, I spend a lot of time on hair rendering but I always find the end result to be somewhat different from Dino, tending to look stiff or too boring from my POV. I can't explain it but its just not the look I want.

(The Bottom 2 images are mine, top 2 are Dino’s)

In my opinion your hair lacks definition and looks kinda messy over all, because of this repetative motion of the strands

bottom left is the only image with 2 girls

ohh i see

also 'the rest', to me, seems to imply more then 2

this one is dino’s work, i think so is the other one of the girl running

I like the hair on the image on the top left, but it's messy in places and you gave it a lot of detail, this could distract from the emotion.
If you compare it to the bottom left, that image has a lot of structure in the hair, it's very easy to follow how the hair flows. there is a lot of detail, but the contrast between the individual hairs and strands is so little that it doesn't distract at all.

on the top right the hair is difficult to follow because it's again very messy, but also because her ponytail (or tail) seems to come out of nowhere.

It looks like you are trying to make hair look natural by just making one strand go left and the other right, but it's just all a mess. even under wind, combed hair wouldn't go like that. I think you should consider flow in your hair. giving direction to your hair as a whole. basically, that's the biggest difference between the upper two images and the bottom left one.

the one on the bottom right has just too much hair on the left side, idk where it comes from but it feels weird to consider it part of her hair.
aside from that, there is just not much saturation which makes the hair seem dull and lifeless. it feels like you used green for the shading of her, maybe try red. otherwhise just imagine a second weaker lightsource abouve her head as an excuse to put more light and color to her hair

omg i’m so so sorry 😭

astral idol

well, I stand by my point

thorn surge
#

you still made very good points i’m no expert on shading at all i was just curious of which drawings were whos

yes i agree i think if there was more light shown in the face and hair it could compliment the amount of light in the stick. or the light in the stick could always be lowered to fit the shading

But the top 2 is dinos

I see, can you explain the lacking definition part? I’ll remember to vary their flow more

Overall very good pics

#

And yeah Phorlova lacks that definition that the Cartethyia has

#

But that will come with time, I'd recommend playing with shapes more by drawing something random, animal, your pen just to practice those shapes

I’ll remember your feedback, thanks for explaining it very clearly.

I'm glad it helps

#

Also one more thing

#

Use lasso tool more

I draw in krita

Lasso tool is my savior when it comes to hair

#

Like I'm still learning how to render anime hair, and it felt like a big improvement when I started using it

#

This is what I painted

#

Like colors here are quite muted but it looks like hair A_A_muscle

I’ll try out the lasso though, thanks for the suggestion

this way you can give the illusion of definition/detail while making the overall lighting more contrasty

#

rendering aside, i think you'll benefit a lot from studying composition and form construction

#

forgot to mention, but i would avoid gradient-ing the hair until you have the lights blocked out

ill rmb that too, thanks again

i compared some of the background and foreground colors to see why your composition isn't as clear

#

it's pretty interesting that you can tell the reference artist deliberately brightens the background whenever the subject in front is dark, and vice versa

This is a really good explanation and I never really had any breakdowns of my art or dino’s explained like this before. I can see what you mean. I’ll be more mindful of contrast.

I have a pretty good understanding of values, I just need to exaggerate the contrast more. Though, I’m not too clear on the hue and saturation. Dino uses more desaturated colors I know that, so it is bad to use a range? Or is my case too extreme of a range (referring to you circling the color picker for both art’s color range)

#

that's actually a good question, i'm no expert either but i don't think using a wide range of values/saturations is inherently bad

#

i think it's probably just harder to control since there're so many variables at play

#

either way, dino's approach still makes sense and work well especially for a dark scene, so it's an aesthetic that i think you can go for

#

also i made a mistake in the notes, i meant to say the values & sat. are all over in your piece, not hue & sat.

Thanks a lot for your help ♥️ this is very well written feedback
