Hey I’m practicing getting better at drawing humans and it’s frustrating sometimes because I can never get the shape of the parts of the bodies down. So I just started practicing the box method. I’m practicing using Spider-Man poses because they’re very dynamic and have a lot of perspective. Am I going in the right direction and does anyone have any tips on how to use the box method and better improve my figures?

yes! a tip i have is to be confident and use strong lines throughout the drawing, especially for emphasizing a shape or a curve of the part of the body
Thank you I guess my problem is I’m not quite good at drawing accurate boxes yet. Also another issue is having is actually translating said boxes to their respective parts (the torso, rib cage)
for reference this is a quick sketch i did a while ago and u can see how using darker lines in different places can help the drawing more
tbh i feel like using the 'line of action' can help, basically finding the center of a part in the body to help with connecting all the other parts
makes it a lot easier to understand how the body parts connect to each other and to undertand symmetry
Line of action! Yes
So I guess another question I have is is this method only good for beginners or do professionals use it too?
i learned this method from professionals on youtube i think a lot of advanced ppl use it
Ok gotcha
So use line of action to help connect the body. I guess my issue is figuring out the correct shapes then
I guess keep practicing?
More spidey practice. Am I getting the hang of it?
I like how ur trying to use shapes to simplify the body parts bro that’s good
I think the best one is the top right one
It flows better than the others
Keep practicing and understanding the way the body parts connects like that and then you’ll be able to make cleaner lines in one go
Gonna update some more practices
So I guess my question is how do you go from making a boxed body to a more complex body without studying anatomy?
https://twitch.tv/pikat Being able to draw poses from imagination has always been a lifelong artist dream of mine, so I did my best to FINALLY learn how to do that. It was a lot harder than I expected, though...

Bro it’s crazy how u can see small improvement already that’s rlly nice 🔥🔥
I’d say keep practicing and drawing with shapes- breaking down complex body parts to simple shapes. It’s meant to be fun don’t stress it. Look at it this way- there’s many ways to start and to finish a drawing, just start how you feel most comfortable
For more complex figures, it’s very important to understand how to find the center of the body cuz from there u can make perspective so easy
Here’s how I like to sketch recently lmk if this helps a bit
Not sure I understand how you got that but maybe it’s because you have more experience?
You mean the center torso or the center that connects the torso and the ribcage?
I literally been having dreams all night about this 😂
I’m practicing literally in my sleep
You mean the line of action?
Oh wait you mean a line that goes through the center of the body? Okay, and how do I use that for complex figures?
To get a feel for how to have the body flow?
So I assume this is the center line
I know I’m doing something wrong but idk what
I think maybe the problem is that everyone online is saying the torso is an egg shape but the thing is Spidey is a buff guy so he doesn’t have a egg shape torso? Or maybe it’s a wider egg shape?
So the egg shape thing won’t work when you’re using buff models as your basis? Idk
So I can kinda almost see what my problem was. Using an eggshell shape for the torso won’t work well if the character is buff like Spider-Man. So use a wider shape?
So far the process I have is
- Establish a line of action and center line.
- Draw boxes to represent the perspective of the parts.
- Draw their respective shapes.
- Add muscle and connect them.
hey yes this is very good list of steps
ur doing good in visualing the shapes and simplifying the body into shapes + also using the center line of the body to help u draw things correctly, but i think rn ur biggest struggle is proportions/making things a bit too big/small compared to other parts of the body
Yeah I can see that.
If my understanding is correct the torso is one and a half head sizes
What part do you think I’m making too small? The abdomen? Because I’m thinking that too
in this one the arms r too big compared to torso
I think the parts I’m struggling with most is upper torso and pelvis
so a tip i learned for figure drawing is to draw the spine first, so you'd wannt to just start with drawing that line of action. And then make sure that line goes to the balence point (either the foot that the pressure is on, or inbetween both feet if it's balenced)
Then I usually go in with the rib shape and the pelvis shape (i don't add the in-between till the end)
After i add the head, hands, and feet (just focus on shapes, not the fingers and toes)
Finally i add the in betweens: The arms, legs, neck, and torso
If you give me a second, i can show you with my sketchbook, i just need 5 minutes to draw it quickly
This is about my process, except usually I use a photo as a real person for a reference but I wanted it to be close to the pose you tried to do
That’s actually a good idea. Will it work with adding muscle too?
So I’m trying to use the center line method for perspective poses but I’m getting stumped
rn i'm trying to sketch figures in different angles from imagination like this slight downward angle pose. Any tips on how to improve and use the center?
Bro my method isn't working this time for some reason
Some practice with learning perspective. Idk how effective this method could be. But I guess I just need to keep practicing
@light sail bro the improvement is crazy I love to see the improvement
It’s more like picking easier poses and angles. I’m having a harder time with complex poses or angles. I wanna someday be in a position where I can come up with poses from scratch
My best advice is to keep drawing from reference
Naturally you can also practice drawing without even drawing like just in your head
Imagining different poses
And watch tutorials on Instagram too they’re very short and super helpful
When u find urself doom scrolling or whatever xd
Nah dont just draw from reference. Youre ruining your creativity that way and youre not applying what youre learning
Draw from reference, then make a drawing without reference
And so on
Reference, no reference, reference, no reference
That’s my plan
Know any good accounts?
Good jakaka. I just wanted to make sure cause that other guy said just keep using references and I was worried 😭
References are good for proportions and shapes for beginners.
Here I did a couple quick poses. One is from imagination and the other was using a reference pose. Which one is better?
Theyre both really good! Have you studied anatomy? I think you should study the skeletal structure
It looks very intimidating at first but its very easy
Try to break every major bone into just one simple shape, like a triangle, circle, square, trapezoid, etc
That’s what I been doing
The skeleton?
I meant the actual skeleton
Like
Oh
Oh like draw skeletons?
This
Yea. It doesnt have to be extremely detailed but
Just the important parts
The muscles are connected to the skeleton
Yea
My list so far are
-The pecs
-The rib cage
-Biceps
-Triceps
-Quads
-Thighs
-Pelvis
Those are the ones I wanna get down the most
Yeah I know
Ohh
For the legs its especially good but it can be useful for the chest too
Since on some muscular men a lot of their bones show so
Okay so skeleton figures. The most important part for the chest is the rib cage
And the spine
Yea
I’ll draw more simple skeletons
That’s actually a good idea
@light sail
the person gave rlly good advice fr, practice drawing the skeleton
but for me what helped me advance a lot is drawing with pen instead of pencil
it forced me to make my lines more intentional and not make that many scratchy lines over time
i say keep doing a lot more reference based drawings tho bc rn what ur mind needs is more libraries of reference pictures so that way you'll be able to invision the figure better and not make that many scratchy lines
in ur free time just grab a pen and do imagination tho fr, on and off is the best- like if ur just bored and not drawing just grab a sticky note or smth and pop a quick anatomy sketch from imagination

like these videos are amazing
ima actually watch some of his vids later its been awhile
Idk my poses are a little stiff.
Another problem I have is I can’t imagine poses in perspective. Is that something you learn with practice?
Like, I wanna do running poses. And I know the basic rules of running poses like the head goes out first, the torso learns out. But when I try to translate that in another angle besides side angle, it doesn’t work
A lot of it is memorizing poses and knowing anatomy but in your case I wouldn’t stress about it too much atm. It’s better to just focus on capturing the poses you see from images more accurately, that can then translate to you having an easier time drawing from memory.
