Doing some value studies. I tried to focus more on the shadows first and then do the midtones to see if it would yield a different results. Any critique for what went well and what I could improve upon with the values?

I feel I have a good understand how about light and shadows work but feel once they're incorporated it doesn't turn out well the art I do.

i think the shadows, espec the hair should be a bit darker!!

i love it so far and i second storm's comment, don't be afraid to darken the shadows. also the skin should be a bit darker, you can see by her hand that the clothing she wears is brighter than her skin, in your study it's practically the same value. the forehead, lips and cupid's bow should be a bit darker too

The whole piece is too light. While looking at it relatively (comparing say, the hand to the hair) the values seem right but converting this to a colour image would yield extremely light skin. As storm had said, darken the shadows and the hair.

Darkening those however, as a consequence, makes the skin look too pale. As much as it is about value, it's also about contrast. Lighter values make darker values look more prominent and vice versa. Go over the whole thing with a very (I do mean very) light grey and build upon it.

Couple of areas that could use shadows, the area under the eye brow, this shadow is a result of the eye socket being recessed. The ears will have a shadow due to the hair. There's also a white spot on the right hand side (our perspective) that needs to be filled in. The original picture is also extremely dramatic since the hair is casting a very prominent shadow on her right eye.

This isn't meant to bash your work, this is just a critique, the works looks solid thus far

The piece is also very cool (as in it has undertones of blue) in it while yours is a lot warmer.

I see what you I mean, I lot did end up leaving out. Was trying to go for a manga look to it but then decided on the full shading which is why I left the skin initially.
I definitely am not pushing values more, especially not going dark which is why I think shading like this ends feeling flat
