I feel like my last piece was somewhat better, but for this one, my shading just looks so bad for some reason. I do so many studies but I just can't seem to figure out how to make my shapes look good in MY work.

ping when you respond please, and markups are preffered

i think the back of the kid needs to have more shadows, and (if im seeing it right) the light is coming from the front, so the back of the car should have some more shadows maybe?

#

maybe a highlight on the person drivings nose

In this video, I will be going through the 1/2/3 shadow system that you’ll often find Japanese artists use and reference often when creating anime style art. Enjoy :)

i think this video can possibly help with the shading?

#

ofc youre doing celshading, so dont blend / smudge tool

#

I think the front of the car is very good and well done, because the lighting is hitting it and you can feel / sense "oh yeah thats the front of the car, i see the light in front"

#

but with the back, its all (mostly) 1 shade, and no sense of shad_ing_ and makes it feel "boring" or "flat"

#

the steering wheel also has 1 shade, so it has no tangibleness and feels like the person right hand is floating on it, but the left hand is shaded, but the steering wheel isnt

#

lemme do a mock up to kind of show what i mean

#

i may not be good at art, but I watched a lot of art critiques for 5 years so I kind of picked up a few things about art

@wanton thistle

#

i tried to illustrate what i was trying to explain

#

i think another reason it feels a bit boring, is theres a lot of dead / empty space not being used

#

im not sure what you plan on putting in the windows of the car, but i personally think you could add something to remove the feeling of emptyiness in it

#

because the shading can only do so much to ocmbat that empty space
