I needed to buy some watercolour paper for my school but I don't know which one I should use. I borrowed my 2 of my cousins watercolour pad saying they are good but I wasn't sure. The brands are Canson and Berkeley. I also tried to swatched them with watercolour of prang (recommended by the teacher) I sadly can't buy other brands since I checked a while ago these are the only ones available.
#Which paper should I use for watercolour?

For me my personal preference would be the CANSON (heavier paper less warping) Also you have to consider the surface (cold press bumpy, hot press smoother. I would use the cold press side. Never heard of berkley and if they cant put what press on the cover i would call is SUS watercolor paper.
For watercolor it is really important to learn your paper weights and presses. The water color lays and flows very different on each type.
Additionally, when your ready look at 100% cotton versus pulp(99% of all regular student grade paper)
whats the difference between a lower gsm (190) and a higher gsm (300) in watercolor papers? if you wouldnt mind answering my question
The Difference is the thickness and the ability to hold water, thicker paper less bleed and less warping. Thin paper bleeds through holds less and wrinkles easy. Experiment on regular printer paper (50gsm and a sheet of the Berkley, with just clear water .. notice how the paper behaves differently when wet. Youll eventually get dips in the warps and your water color will run into the valleys. You'll notice that's why Arteza Water color pad 5x8 is $7, and Arches 5x7 is $30.... HUGE difference in paper quality.
My personal prefered paper for sketching is Strathmore 300gsm. Any Serious work i use Arches or Canson 100% cotton 300 or 640 gsm..
The canson pad you have there is very suitable for just getting into it.
Thank you so much!
