This is what my organization's old logotype looks like. I want it to be minimalist but still somehow refer to a compass. I think it looks kind of ugly right now, so how should it look? Do you have any suggestions? I’ll try to return the favor!

I guess I would make the logo look more like a compass. If you haven't had said it was a compass I would not have thought it was one. It needs to pop out at you like “oh yeah that is a compass” or recognizable that it’s a compass without the words there. I think its alright if its not super duper simplistic. Just simplistic enough that it could be recreated fairly easily.
Or like hints of a compass.

Maybe the logo should have handwritten text? Handwritten text looks cool and youthful, but I’m not sure if it would be serious enough for this kind of organization.

Idk if handwritten/script font looks youthful, I see it more often on bridal logos and such.
Youthful font to me would be more like scratchy, loose fonts. This is not the best example, but the only one I can think of right now, but comic sans

This looks more business and formal which is bad in my opinion for a youth group so maybe more bouncy and intamate fonts like you suggested handwritten and i love the idea of inserting the red and white for polish in the box but the text colours may need changing
