Hello! I'm trying to do this piece and It's the first time for me to add shadows. I've followed online tips to the best of my understanding but something about the shadows is still off to me. Can you guys help? Other than that any other critiques are also welcome!

Wait this is an older rendition of the picture. I'm gonna put the never rendition here.

#

So other than the shadows I've also had trouble with the Labrador's face and head shape in general. I've been redoing it over and over and it just doesn't seem quite right. Right now it looks good enough but I'd love your feedback.

Light and shadow has heavy emphasis on knowing form

#

Since ure having trouble break down all of ur complex shapes into simplier shapes

#

For the heads id look into the loomis methods. Yes its a human head but anthro anatomy follows human anatomy mostly.

#

Think of the snout is a cup shape with a little extra planes

#

Keep in mind of ur lightsource. If its coming from the right, all the faces facing the right will be lighter.

Additionally objects will cast shadows onto other things. As well as creating interactions to block out all light. Thays like 101. Theres more to shadows but u gotta kinda master the basics first before u need to worry about other things lol

Here's my progress so far. I've restarted a few times and I've had no real problem (I think) Except for the Labrador. The light is coming from the back and top right and I kinda get confused about how the shadows would look. I tried a few times and it all just looks bad. Can you help?

Here's the progress

Clearer picture

Actually, should it come from the back? Or from the front?

#

Does this look good?

Commenting here to remind people of this post's existence.

hm, try practicing form

#

it tries to make you think in 3D rather than 2D, while visualizing where you place your shadows will be beneficial

But they still read as not dark enough if u just want one shadow.

#

If ure going for more depth then u need cast shadows that i mentioned

#

And u can do other fancy shadow things

Looks good. Id just give a lil more form to the lighting. Let it curve around the figure instead of just being blocked on

#

For the right figure, id also add lighting on the blow line and the nose

#

As theyll be facing the light too. If u rlly wanna be facing add lighting to a tiny bit of the other brow line area too
