#How can I improve my lineart?

I think that my biggest issue when drawing is that my line art looks unconfident. I'm somewhat okay at rendering, but when it comes to line art, I falter hard. Here's a drawing I made super quickly, in under 30 minutes, as an example. I attached the timelapse as well.

Even for drawings I spend a long time working on, the line art still isn't good, in my opinion. I want to improve, but I don't know how to make my lines more confident. Even practicing a lot isn't helping much.

Here's some art I took longer working on

hello webz, i think there are two ways to approach this. if you want to embrace the scratchy/sketchy style, then i recommend using a brush that is slightly more transparent as well as an eraser

#

the key with this approach is to really really abuse the eraser to clean up your lines (i like to use one that feels like a kneaded eraser)

#

or, if you want to go for a more inking/clean style, i would focus on using as little pen strokes as possible

#

the key to this approach is to work on having precise, fast pen strokes and abuse ctrl+z and clean up with multiple lineart passes

#

personally i found it helpful to not connect every line i draw, as this saves me from having to clean up rough connecting points

So i'd prefer to stick with that

#

so I can import it into my clip studio

dm'ed it to you since i cant send here

#

feel free to play around with the opacity curve

Alright, i'll draw something once I have breakfast. Can I ping you once I upload the timelapse here?

#

of course, let me know how it goes

#

if it works well then ill have to get some advise from you too

low meteor
#

haha, i'm not that good at giving advice, but sure

lapis canopy
#

ill dm you for it since my question is not really related to the original post

I used the pen and eraser you sent me on this doodle

#

still not what i'm looking for

#

in my line art

You are using very chicken scratchy lines. I fully am aware that you want messy lines. But chicken scratchy and messy are not the same thing. You want to have longer complete lines but you can go back over a few times depending on where the focal point is. More lines=more focus

Most of the time with character art it is the face. So youd have thicker/more lines on the face and hair, but everywhere else will have thinner/fewer lines. You do want to make sure tho that the big important shapes have thicker/more lines as well to create some balance throughout the drawing

low meteor
#

Do you have a brush you could recommend me for drawing like that?

#

I didn't like the one I used on that drawing that much

Im still figuring this out myself so i cant really offer anything. Sorry

low meteor
#

Honestly, no matter what I do, I can't stop doing chicken scratchy lines

#

I'm just not confident enough

You need to practice. Its not as simple as a flick of the switch. You need to work on it

#

and it will get worse as time passes, the habit will be stronger

low meteor
#

What I tried doing was: Do scratchy lines for sketch then try doing normal lines for line art, but somehow, the line art looks worse, a lot worse

worldly gulch
#

i know what you mean, like, when you are doodling sketching, you are a bit more free, you can do all those

low meteor
#

look

#

I'm going to draw something rn

#

and i'll do a side by side of the sketch and line art

worldly gulch
#

i have what is considered, a clean lineart

#

which is, mostly what i need on the style i will have

#

on a final lineart

#

there's not much difference from the LAST sketch i did, (i do a few, structure, gesture, like 4 stuff before this blue one)

#

but that doesn't mean i can't do sratchy stuff

#

it's a choice

#

in fact it's easier to do that

#

usually if i want, a bit more personality i just use some texture stuff idk

#

shit like that

#

but in rough sketchs, it can look scratchy

#

again like i said, you should be able to choose when to do this

#

not being the only thing you can do

#

MY ADVICE would be

#

i never practice lineart, those, line excersices, never ever

#

the amount of drawings, sketches i did, were enough

#

i feel like it's more, like muscular memory, habit, like

#

let's assume the structure, perspective proportions are right, like, you don't need to make changes from the sketch (i don't like changing stuff)

#

and just focus on lineart

#

do that, do lineart over and over, confident long lines with the shoulder

#

or short ones with your arm/hand whatever

#

it's all habit

low meteor
#

I did my best to try and not do chicken lines

worldly gulch
#

lineart is just tracing of our own art, sketches, just keep doing it, while being aware of the lines, eventually you will revert this and do it without thinking

#

it happens with other things too proportions perspective

low meteor
#

Finished it

#

A guy told me the sketch looked better

#

so now i'm a little unsure

#

I’m looking at this and I am thinking it could just be a canvas size issue

#

Up the resolution a bunch

#

i think you could've cleaned up the sketch instead if you didn't want to draw lineart separately

#

but i do still think the lineart looks better

lapis canopy
#

also, this might be a personal thing, but i dislike pens that taper off at the ends, so all of my pens have a blob at the beginning and ending of a stroke

#

it adds character to your lines, if you want to try it just let me know

low meteor
#

I like non aliased brush

low meteor

I got a new tablet and my lines got a LOOOT better, I don't do chicken scratch
