Here comes my ultimate hair drawing guide. When drawing hair you always ALWAYS want to remember that hair has mass on top of the head. It is never perfectly suctioned to the skull even when it is pulled up in a tight bun/ponytail or gelled back. It still has mass on top. With that in mind you will want to start out with a vague general shape of the hair you want. Dont fuss about details. We are just focusing on the general shape. Now go a teeny bit into further detail and have large chunks of hair. Still just focusing on general shape. No tiny details yet. That wont be happening for a while. You also will want to think about where the hair is visually flowing to. Now this is not the same as the hair literally only sprouting from that point unless youre drawing ponytail zuko. In that case yes. Do that XD figure out where it will flow to and remember to keep it visually flowing all throughout the hair drawing process. In cases of pulled back hair you will want to still have large chunks but kinda vary it in size and shape as it is hair and hair is not perfect. It also is important to think in layers when drawing these. A nice rule of thumb is to have a front middle and back(or bottom depending on the hair style). You can have more or less layers if your art demands it. Some styles only need one layer because the whole style is very 2D such as steven universe or adventure time. With those large chunks go a little further into detail. But keep those details semi in those shapes you just drew. You can have it going a little outside of it if you feel it is necessary and will make it look better overall. But do remember that you should still keep it resembling the original chunks of hair. Now that you have that done you can go further into detail. But once again keep it still resembling the previous steps. Keep going further into detail until you have reached a point that it would not make sense for you to go depending on the style you draw in and if it has reached your satisfaction. If you need to make adjustments in shapes it is easier to do it in the earlier stages as it is more simplified. Not to say you cant do it later on but the further in you go the harder it is to make it look unified with the rest of the hair. Thank you for reading my wall of text
Also the fox ear placement looks really off to me. Fox ears do tilt in different directions but it cant change the actual location on the head
How would I make the ears seem like there in the same location but tilted.
@inner hollow you also mentioned the style being very 2d how would I make it appear as more of a 2.5d perspective like this.
So the first pic is what i see as happening. The two ears being in completely different locations. Second pic being where i think it should be in neutral position. Third being what id recommend for your drawing. Sorry for it not being super accurate. Ive never drawn fox ears

Thanks this really helps I'll try applying that now.
So when i said very 2d looking i meant like steven universe, gravity falls, or adventure time type 2d
Yeah and im asking how to make it less 2d and more like those images which feel more 3d.
also i tried breaking the hair into shapes and got this.
Ohhh. So you are headed in the right direction however on the right the hair chunks are interrupting the visual flow of the hair
Even the little chunk on the left interrupts it
Id show what to do but no longer have my ipad on me cause im now at work
Is this better
Bring them in a bit
Sorry for overlap. Had to use an app on my phone using my finger
ok thanks
Yeah however the right side is a bit heavier and you need to visually balance it out
@inner hollow is the right better now?
Have more volume over here
Tbh im not seeing much of a difference

okay i'll add more
Make it really puff out to match the other side in the back
My bad i just realised this is the wrong image.😭

Looks a lot better then

Yeah
@inner hollow if you don't mind can you tell me if I have a style issue because all my character sketches are with the intent of being for my webtoon at some point and my characters atheist to me don't look like they fit into one style.
And then the one I'm currently working on.
This was her last design

So its fine if youre still doing conceptual art to make them different style wise but once youre trying to solidify things thats when you need to make it more consistent. And yeah they definitely dont look like they belong together for a number of reasons. One being that their shading style is so different as well as their lineart. Their clothes also seem to be from totally different worlds which doesnt help with it feeling unified
My characters have gone through several phases and still are so theres no shame in them looking different for a while. Just work to make them feel unified in the end
The desgins were pretty much finalised but what makes you think there so diffrent. For context: Also the dude is a orphan so poor meaning instead of a actual hero outfit he just gets his jacket and goes (it is set in a hero school like mha and is about the abuse of mutants and thier stuggles being hated by non-mutant heros.). The maid one is Middle class so she has a outfit sybolic of her mum who killed herself and the fox girl is high class with high societal standing so she has full plated armour and weapons. which are meant to be very flashy.
