#did I make some progress?

The best way to learn the human face is irl photos. Learn from life. The loomis method is a good starting point because it shows all of the planes and makes it easier to see
Proko, marc brunet and angel ganev have good videos on this topic
I think that the loomis method is not really for me I just get really irritated trying to fo this
Every single time it looks off and just ugly
then another method i rec is a grid method. what im showing you a variant of the method; usually youd split the ref into a grid and draw what in each box. what im doing here is using grids/lines to compare my proportions
from the looks of it, here are the things im noticing:
- the forehead is too low
- the left eye is too high up
- the chin is too small
- the face is too wide
- the ear is too close inwards
Well thank you, I deleted the drawing and start over, but honestly I'm so lost I have no idea how to start drawing faces and it's just demotivating
break it down into simpler shapes then
gimme like 2 mins and ill show u want i mean
Sure
Methods aside I think you need a break on this drawing specifically, forcing it to work will backfire in my opinion
Perhaps another drawing u can work on in the meantime?
I need like a step by step tutorial how yo exercises drawing faces like
First draw eyes, draw them until you good from every perspective
And then nose
And stuff like that
I'm too dumb 😭😭😭
Yes like I said I deleted it cuz I got a Lil too frustrated and idk
Think I should try drawing from photos but that seems too hard
start thinking in terms of shapes when blocking out the shapes of the head. like how were already doing. but continue to compare positive AND negative space.
what you can start doing is apply that to shadows too. this is great to learn with REAL photos. itll help you get the hand of irl shadows so you can easier simplify it (harder to do it the other way around)
how this works is like 3d art irl. https://youtu.be/zC3OxonJcXQ?si=3dcgNE_h2WV9-Tvm very similiar to sculpting
Consider this a sequel to the "Drawing like a Painter" video I made years ago.
In this video, I go over the main brush I currently use in Corel Painter and also discuss the main ideas I try to keep in mind when digital painting.
If you want to try Corel Painter, here is a link to more info: https://store.corel.com/1103/cookie?affiliate=41673...
heres me applying what i said rq
super jank cuz im using a trackpad but you can already see a face (if you had poor vision)
Do I need to render every drawing or just sketch with shown shadows is good for exercise?
50/50. you want the rendering practice but it doesnt have to be full blown 150% completion.
you do what you think will benefit you the most. if you think starting off simple like how i showed to get the grip of seeing simple shapes first then thats all you got to do
and then you can move onto refining it more once you think you can establish the base shadows really well with like 3-4 values
Okay I understand? Do you have any more tutorials showing it step by step? It'd be really helpful to me
if doing it in color is too hard rn, do it in grey scale and then eventually move to color (since diff colors have diff values even if it feels darker)
Yes, I know that, I'm always using grey scale it's more comfortable for me

Ever try painting like a sculptor or drawing like a painter? This may sound unintuitive, but thinking in large blocks of shape and tone will help you develop the forms to look more real and natural. Subscribe to Proko: http://bit.ly/SubProko
In this critique, we will watch one of our student's digital process videos and review where they can im...
A true beginner's guide to digital painting. The best way to learn the basics and get started with it. Remember, much like learning to play an instrument, the most enjoyable way to get good is to take works you like and break them down in a way that makes it accessible without ruining the intent.
A huge thank you to Ahmed Aldoori for letting ...
Morgan Weistling returns for part 2 of our video where he draws and paints a portrait of Stan. While he’s working on Stan’s portrait you’ll get to hear his unique approach to creating art. You’ll learn how to merge the techniques of painter and draftsman together so you can draw as if you’re painting and vice versa.
Intro - 0:00
Drawing Stage ...
heres more examples of artists using the same concept
theres a lot of speedpaints/timelapse of people doing this techique mostly in digital painting. if you put them on like .5 or .75 speed you can kinda study how the artist works
cool. didnt know where youre at with ur skills
Oh so I tried to do this drawing as the method in the middle video
Guess it didn4 came ut good
No, second but it looks like a really bad downgrade
i mean ur not gonna be good 2nd try if youre new to it
youre also lacking in some fundamentals so its gonna be a bit harder
This was my first
but yeah highly suggest using irl photos for practice instead of anime work.
oof yeah thats still off
Sure I'll try to do it once again with a real photo
the og photo already had it split in 2 values already lol
When I choose the photo Can I use filters to make it in grey scale or is that cheating? 😭
I know but I think it looks a little better and ngl I was proud of myself
it does look better lol
oooh good refernece. high quality and good lighting that doesnt wash out anything
would it help you to do 2 values? i wouldnt go over 4-5.
if you squint at the photo, youre brain will automatically simplify the light and shadows to help you see in 2 values. it makes the distinction between the two more clear
I'll try two and then add third one
Thank you for your help I'll show you when I'll finish this drawing
Is it good enough to add third value?
This is speedpaint of me struggling
Youre not going "dark" enough. Youre only marking the darkest shadow instead of having all of the shadows in mind.
I did this roughly. Some areas are still not refine BUT id reg u work with a larger brush so you can get the big shapes in first
Oh okay thank you, I was scared it's going to be too dark and hard to read. Can I redrew what you did on my canvas?
Yeah
Id do more practices. One or two wouldnt be enough to ingrain it your muscle memory
Yes, I plan to do more
So for now I still have to stick with light and dark value?
Yeah
Heres a print i did recent with just black and white value. Its also a fun way to get practice in if youre able to afford to do printmaking. A good cheap alternative is carving erasers or smth similar. If ur looking to get some fun in too with the practice
Oh I did something like that in school it was a lot of fun hahaha
Btw thank you for your help really, I feel motivated again
And your art is really beautiful
Np. U got this. Its gonna take some time but itll be worth it
Tyy
Thank you! ❤️
Nicce. Getting better. Id suggest you compare negative space too to get begger proportions. Like the left side of the cheek slope is too steep. The angle is more like an equilateral triangle so 60 degree angle whilst yours is steeper than that
Oh yeah that's true I'll make sure to check that next time
I wanted to use that reference at first but I had trouble with nose since the background is also light
I het out of class in 10 mins so i can show u then
Sure if you want to!!
study head construction
Yes I'm doing that, this time on photos with real people
Help I don’t really know what happened in the second one
I got confused
Should i do background light on the second one?
I get out of class at 2 today. Ill help you then
Yay!
Tried again but I don’t think it’s any better
this is not construction
So what is it? How can I study that?
youre doing value studies

Introduction to Figure Construction

Head Drawing and Construction
https://www.proko.com/s/NQRY?af=543975
construction means drawing it in 3d space
understanding the forms
youre constructing the head
with 3d shapes
Set it up like this and practice construction, draw large don’t draw small
Not to begin with
So idmt doesn't have to be finished piece? Only a study sketch?
You can do a bunch of head construction drawings, don’t just no brain rush through them, use ur head when you do then, but yes they should be sketches, at least to begin with
Later when u got the hang of it u can turn them into finished portraits
Just get a hang of how to construct the head
Okay I'll do that, but it ain't a problem if in meantime I'm doing sketches like that?
You can start with simpler methods like loomis, reiley then maybe move into studying the skull + asaro head
Watch the 2 videos I sent u, they explain head construction
Okayy
Also read Michael Hampton figure drawing and invention
I think that’s what it’s called
It’s a good beginner anatomy construction book
I don't really like loomis I don't feel like it's for me, I tried tho
Mate
U have to learn it
Sorry
It’s basics
It’a just tools in ur toolbelt
You’ll be happy later
I dont know how 😭😭
Well I'll try but first this two videos
They’re both based on the foundation of the loomis method
You can’t really do more advanced head construction if you can’t do the most simple form
Which is the loomis method
It’s a sphere with a triangle
Well done you have any good tutorials then?
I feel lost when I'm trying to find anything on my own
You could read Andrew loomis book, just the head drawing section but let me see
It’s been 6 years since I released my first youtube video on drawing loomis heads and now I think it’s time for a little recap and to give you some new info on it. Subscribe to Proko: http://bit.ly/SubProko
In this video, I’ll do a few quicksketch studies of the average loomis head from different angles.
Parts 2 and 3 will show you how to use...
There can’t go wrong with proko
Watch a bunch of projo
Proko
Okay I'll do some of this exercises today
Is this even correct
Close, the lower line (nose line) should be slightly up, to make it equal thirds
Circle is a bit too big but you’ll get it keep it up
The circle on the side of the head
Oh okay, I'll do more sketches like that, thank you
These are all the sketches that I made today
Thought u said u cant loomis. Seemed like u proved urself wrong
Does it feel weird cuz ur finally doing it right for once?
So ur no longer having to do the bad habits
Cuz ik thats how it was for me
Well honestly I don't think I have any bad habits drawing humans because I didn't draw ANY before because I listen to one toxic artist and she was like oh yeah basics are really important (they are ik) but she was saying this like
If you don't have basics don't even try to do something more demanding
Qnd I just stayed in place for a few long years
And well that's the time when I really want to learn how to draw humans
Because I'll always see things I can do better
Gotta get urself some high self efficiency. If u think u can ull have a higher chance of achieving it
U can say the ones angled downwards, the arches arent arched ejough. Theyre still in upwards angle
The body is full of arcs. If angle is down, all the arcs goes down. Vise versa for upward facing
Yes I see that now, gonna work on this more
It doesn’t look good
Your missing the cheek guidelines. Itll help u guide the jaw better
I don't understand this method, like how does the big the circle is supposed to be? Where I should start the chin? How big the chin is supposed to be, I just can't 😭😭😭
Circle is 2/3 of the head
Chin is a third downwards usually depending on the face shape. But ideal is 1/3
Chin aligns with the inner corner of the eyes
Its all proportional. Its smth u have to anaylze
I'm trying but it's irritating it always looks off ao much 😭😭😭😭
youll get it at some points
just keep watching videos on it and practicing, read on it, everytime youll catch onto something new
i cant tell you how many times ive rewatched and revisited books
Lol it took me a few weeks to learn the head fully
Ur on day 2. Its not gonna be all baller
Ur also in a really pessimist mindset so its gonna affect ur outcome
I know maybe it's just isn't my day, I'll try to do more sketches later tho because I don't want to give up that fast
Probs. Take a break. Nothing productive happens if ur rushing or too stress
There is more
try to construct using straightlines instead of curves when you first start out, straight lines are better at indicating form
so when you do the lines for the thirds use straight not curves, you can do that later
start with the basic perspective ones, straight on view, side view, 3 quarter
Hate
Thank you!
More studies I think it’s starting to look decent
getting better bro!
try not to vary the size of the piece you cut off the side
but its 100% improvement
Thank you, I'll watch more videos about it especially where to add eyes, nose and mouth
try not to do that yet
just focus on the head shape
remember to also have fun. Try to draw some portraits ofc
then go back to the studies
I will, I want to draw some value studies now because that's fun to me
But like when csn I start doing that?
you can if you want
but dont just draw eyes, read about how eyes work
then go draw them
or watch videos
if you just go draw them without any understanding of whats going on u wont learn
I wanted to do something for fun but criticism is still welcome 😻
Ayo bro ur heads r getting better
Fast progress
I used someone else drawing but added shading myself with a real photo, I know drawing from others art is not good but it was just for fun
I will try to do more sketches like that just by myself and aome references photos
I’m not satisfied w how this looks
That’s the best I could do I fear
So that's the final final version
Hello today I made more sketches
I'm trying to do something everyday but I have no idea if it's any better
did I make some progress?
More sketches
Today I tried something different but I messed up perspective a little
