I think the shirt is too flat, I suggest you to study clothes and folds
yeah i just figured that out, the issue is i can’t do clothes folds without it looking like trash…
Search for reference photos of real clothes, and watch some YouTube videos could be handy
yeah i’ll search for some photos then ty
like this?
is this better
yes, it looks better imo
one thing i would like to add is that i dont think the shirt should accentuate his muscles
the neckline is loose, but the sleeves arent which kinda don't fit together
so what i suggest is make the sleeves looser, or if you want to accentuate his muscular build then make the overall shirt tighter.
a tight shirt would also mean diff foldings so you would kinda have to redo it, meanwhile if you want to keep the shirt pretty loose then you should change the outline of the sleeves
i wanted the shirt to be just a little loose which is why you can notice the muscles but it not tight
but yeah i think i need to redo the folds lol
is this better
i see. unfortunately i cant give specific advice as i also struggle with drawing clothes and folds :ˋ) all i can say is stick to references
:’) it’s ok
for this one, i think the neckline should be tightened too
wait
oh yeah forgot about the neckline
yeah and this is my 2 cents but i also think the waist can be a little tightened too. imo it's too loose for the folds that u just drew
alr i will do that! also the little area under the left arm (our perspective) should be tightened too?
or to the left of the left arm
southwest
girl im sorry wha
im too sleepy for this lmao
OH I SEE
well the clothing should be very close to his body. idk if this is good advice but just imagine outlining him shirtless, since the shirt is tight
i think i did it
hopefully
my fingers hurt
is it better? @quartz gulch
alr tysm for your help! i’ll start coloring now
if there’s nothing else to fix
another input if i may, is the forearm part (our right side) can be tightened too
you can use liquify
yes, im looking forward to the colored version ^^
alr i’ll send you the finished result! tysm
ahh this doesn’t look right😖
@quartz gulch pretty much finished result, what do you think?
it looks fine to me aside from minor mistakes in the clothing folds
one thing i would add is a cast shadow on the bookshelves, to indicate that he's leaning on it
where would i add the cast shadows?
over time u will be able to get a feeling of how to make the folds right, it's a matter of practicing with references
yeah i’ll keep on practicing!
also this advice may seem out of place but i want to point out that if u want to improve for now, your goal should be to make more artworks (with a relatively fast turnaround time) and get feedbacks here
will do so!
@quartz gulch did i place the cast shadow correctly?
wait forgot to send the pic
aren’t cast shadows supposed to be sharp tho?
idk if it makes sense but shadows from diffused light can be soft
wait im sorry, i think in this case you're correct, since the shadows on him looks like a direct light
i was thinking of smth more like this haha
ooh that looks better lol
this is how it looks like with a sharper cast shadow
oh, so no cast shadow then?
yeah, i was also thinking of smth similar but without any cast shadow (the first pic) somehow it doesn't seem like he's leaning on the bookshelf
i think i’ll just make the shadow lighter then
well the best way is to look at a reference tbh
if you cant find one you can always make one yourself
just photograph yourself leaning to a wall with a similar light source and observe how it behaves
will try this tomorrow
if i have time
i hope this is better
also the light source is coming from a lamp/chandelier so i think light is coming from top left?
so idk if the shadow makes sense but if i have no shadow then it doesn’t look like he’s leaning on the bookshelf so idk
tricky situation
When you are drawing somebody crossing there arms it is important to draw the hands in the reight place
I suggest looking up a reference
I think the book in the background really doesn't fit with your character. I don't mean the background of the book is bad, but the book feels like it's much more 3 dimensional than the characters. that's why it looks a little weird for me. Sorry bad english hope this help
I think you could also make the lineart in the exposed parts a little brighter 😭😭 sorry bad english
His far arm looks like its sticking a bit too far out
Nah this looks great
i finally clicked on why the lighting was so complicated. the lighting isn't consistent. it is coming from the same direction.
but the main problem is that the type of lighting is different. the light on background is a soft diffused light causing it to have such soft gradient.
meanwhile, the lighting on the character is harsh, indicating that the character is hit by a direct light instead of diffused light
this is what i mean by direct light vs soft light, im sure you can immediately tell the difference.
for the pic with a direct light, it actually includes the 2 types of light too
no he just has long sleeves that covers his hands so that’s why you don’t see them
ty for your tips! ill fix both of those things
ohh i see… do i just fix this issue by making the bg light more harsh? because i want the light to be harsh
also should i add some light on the right side of the bg so i could make a cast shadow there?
because i made my own reference and saw that the cast shadow was on the right, which i alr knew would be the case and there was barely any shadow on the left side and it was more towards the bottom of my body which isn’t shown in my drawing
but my light source wasn’t harsh (couldn’t find one) so prob not that accurate?
from your desc it seems pretty accurate to me
you can do this, but it seems like it would be difficult to make changes to the bg
also you might disagree with this advice but i think the current artwork is good enough
which is why i suggest that if your main goal is to improve, it would be much more efficient if you were to start making other artworks using refs and other stuff.
and after a while, im sure you will learn much more, then you can come back to this one and refine the piece even further
but it's up to you, you can do whatever you feel like ofc^^ im just giving my own perspective to this
actually i do agree with that because it’s honestly (almost) perfect in my eyes and is one of the best things i’ve drawn
in a few months though when i’ve hopefully gotten better i will be able to see imperfections in my drawing and fix them
but i’ll just change the lineart in the exposed parts to be lighter and leave it be for now
because my brain hurts lol
YESS it's already good 😭 just a few minor mistakes thats all
yeah i get it, which is why i suggested to just move on haha
all of these advice can b overwhelming
tysm again, you have been a massive help, i will share the FINAL final result with you in a few minutes
im happy to help 👍🏻
Oh you already did it, I needed to scroll, nice work
took a bit more than a few mins lol, i added some light to some places and tweaked lineart color a bit that’s it
i’m happy
ty<3
😍😍 looks good
looking forward to your future artworks
❤️
Hey your art looks great, congrats, And keep improving 👏🏻
