i have been trying to practice parts of the body and even though individual parts look ok the body as a whole never looks right. by ''right'' i mean kinda like its made out of plastic instead of flesh? part of it is probably because i suck at gestures. any tips whatsoever helps

#

for now i just need the general look to be right so i can work on learning hands, feet, face and abdomen details

In my opinion, the motion your model has right now isn't very fluid and follows a very 90 degree kind of motion. making the body stand more naturally could help your model look much more human!

gesture drawings are something i really struggle with so im kinda avoiding them lol. the only detail that kinda adds motion to my practice is tilting the torso back but besides that im stumped on gesture

#

i should probably also look into learning the gesture line

Alright, so lets explain:

  1. Chest: Imagine the chest as two water baloons nailed to a wall. Depending on the size, they'll curve up or down, and also depending on firmness and age. I changed the left(?) chest so it'd be more anatomically correct, but it's better to search up references
  2. Right leg: I changed this leg to not show the backside because since it's rotating to the side it'd hide the muscle behind.
  3. Arm: The arm is more tensed up to show more concentration and anger, I think. I also curled up the hand to give the aforementioned effect, this way it looks less stiff.
  4. Your hand was actually surprisingly good, I simply curled the fingers a bit to also make it less stiff, this is up to you, though.
  5. I tried to show a bit more of the crotch area? It's tight-fitting clothes so it's gonna show I guess
  6. Added ear and made the chin a bit more rounded.

That's pretty much it. I'm a bit burnt out right now and sleepy because I just took a bath, and I'm also not the person that should be asked for anatomy tips AT ALL. However, the main thing that makes your drawing look plastic is the positioning of the figure itself. Notice the word plastic? Exactly, it looks like an action figure. Therefore, to not make it look plastic, add emotion and intention to it, plus make sure you highlight the muscles, bones and flesh and all that gross stuff so it looks human.

My attempt at, like, helping was kinda lazy because again I'm sleepy, but I hope you learned a thing or two. Keep drawing, u got good skill ^^

Here's something to think about when drawing, I'll post an example.

#

If you want to add some dynamism to your figures, think about shifting weight to one leg or the other (or in general, how shifting in weight effects stance) and how that effects the angles. If you notice how someone will shift weight to one leg, it will displace the angles of the femure/pelvis as well as the shoulder to account for the shift of weight.

#

Of course this also goes for how you placed your figure. If you want someone to be grounded, think about lowering their center of gravity, or placing weight on both feet equally on the ground as you did.

#

also push your forms and volumes. The middle/waist is kind of standard, flat hourglass in your drawing. Try pushing volumes and forms to represent the rib cage and pelvis that protrude through the skin.
Also try to improve centerlines to guide your figure. For example the crotch in your drawing is off center compared to the rest of the body.

#

Anyways rant over.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

If you have any other questions let me know 🙂

#

very minor things but you're doing awesome!!! :DDD

Thank you so much for the detailed advice this changed the way I look at poses. I don't really understand the center of gravity but I'll look up some videos to help understand (BTW your sketch is really cool) I'll figure out how to shift weight and I think centering the crotch will get better with practice so ima just keep grinding. İll try to fix the mistakes you both mentioned and post the fixed version if I remember.
