hi y'all i'm a noob drawer and i've been practicing lines lately and i'm pretty confident in my diagonal and horizontal lines, but i'm struggling so much with drawing vertical lines. i don't know if i should be positioning my elbow far out so that my forearm can just move up and down like when i do diagonal or horizontal lines, or i if i should be dragging my elbow up and down with my shoulder to draw the vertical lines but when i do that i struggle quite a lot, does anybody have any piece of advice? sorry for the big text 🙏

#

i also struggle a bit with diagonal still if i draw it towards my body kind of

#

If the top of the line wobbles right, make sure the next line wobbles left, then slowly keep on adjusting

#

For me, I like to aim for 7 straight lines in a row

If you can’t get it after lets say 3 pages or you’re getting reaaaaally frustrated,

Move on to something else or take a break. Then later on or the day after try it again.

Your brain works to consolidate all the thing you learn when you are resting, so it’s a really important part of the process.

Some of these things just need to be done over a longer period of time, but don’t give up :)

#

I’d also say to do actually drawings of things you find enjoyable.

So don’t just do lines and circles, make sure to mix in other stuff as well that’s beyond your ability.

Idk what exactly youre doing, but draw with your shoulder rather than with your fingers or wrist. Your shoulder is much more stable than fingers and wrists. Using your fingers to draw is great for tiny details but when it comes to big shapes, use your shoulder and/or elbow

A DaB student!

Er do you draw on table top
Or at an angled surface
It's a lot harder to use your whole arm if it's a flat table top

#

Not that my vertical lines are any better but
Well
Draftsman tables are awesome back in uni
I just use a clipboard now and settle it at a comfortable angle
Though it also let's me rotate the whole page more freely

you can try putting it at an angle and try the motions
see how different they feel like
it definitely feels a lot more intuitive at an angle for me

Ghosting pver the line before making is a common thing

I didn't mean ghosting
but yes ghosting it too
tell me what works though, because I need it as well

i want to move to becoming a digital artist some day and i don't know how efficient it would be if i didn't learn how to just draw without needing to flip and rotate my board all the time

#

but thank u all for yall input i really appreciate it

also a lot less mentally taxing.

Flipping is a very good tool for many people too, I see many professionals flip and rotate the canvas.

It helps you see the drawing with fresh eyes which is really important in seeing mistakes and stuff. Some traditional artists find flipping so useful they have a mirror on their desk to look at it.

Meaning your brain gets used to it and you cant see error in it
