This is a work in progress design, but I would like to water color it, and I've never tried to before.
Should I do shading in pencil and then coat over it? Or should I leave it like this and do all the shading work in pencil.

I will do the style texturing on the cave walls with pen, Reference is the 2nd image.
I just would like some guidance of how I should proceed, since I really don't want to mess this up.
Thanks!

So first off what youre showing is digital. Watercolor is physical paint. Second with watercolor you work from light to dark. Not the other way around. Third if youre deciding to use watercolor brushes for whatever software youre using you still will be using the same sort of techniques that would be done in the traditional medium

It’s really bent and kinda wonky, the scan document feature kinda made it look more viewable imo.

Ok so you did this on printer paper. Its not going to turn out very well tbh

I have another Cotton paper which should be suitable

Ok. What paper is it. Cause the paper you use 100% makes a difference

100% Cotton, it's the medium roughness

Ok. So while cotton paper is really good for watercolor it also can get really pricy. Especially for beginning i recommend to get a simpler paper. Still should be classified as watercolor tho

Yeah I know, I was given some Cotton papers and I would like to put them to good use. I'm hesitant to ruin them so that's why I'm using printer paper right now to kinda plan out everything

Thats fair

But yeah start with watercolor then you can later put some more mediums in the mix. But make sure the paint is dry before you do that. Also dont do graphite or charcoal cause it will smear everywhere and will make the painting not look good anymore

Graphite and charcoal like Pre-Watercoloring or Aff- Watercoloring? Again new to it, sorry if it's a stupid question

In general. When wet it bleeds everywhere. When on top it will smudge no matter what
