I found something that works for me, but I want to make it look more complex if that makes sense. I see art that uses a whole lot of colors and it looks fantastic.

Well this is only one light with a white background so no renounce light either. The cloth doesnt really give cast shadow which can change the coloring a whole lot. I think just practicing lighting and with different or many light sources will make it more complicated also rebounce light/reflection will make it more complicated.
Try and get a refrence of what you want to color like and try and see where the color is coming from ask yourself why. Most artists use color theory to make their coloring better so learn that and see how your favorite artists are using color theory.

To simply explain, having a light source can really add complexity to your drawing, why? because then you work with more colors and values

I think just by adding lighting and some more detail in the hair, you can kinda tell that the values are richer than before
this doesn’t include color variety, too
I made it gray scale so u can focus on the values
I think many doors can open when incorporating a light source in ur work👍
I’m not a pro, so I prob wasn’t able to effectively show what I mean, but hopefully ya get the point xd
