Proportions and shading, a little more contrast could help
This is what the basic outline should look like I think
Iām havenāt really attempted a simplistic drawing before but this is as simple as I could do so that it still resembles the actor
What I did here is that I just observed basic shapes in the reference and then slightly simplified it and drew it on my own
what REALLY matters is how you shade it
Thatās the real challenge
Imma try and attempt that now
What Iām doing here is that instead of blending in the shadows together, Iām just leaving them as squares and shapes with sharper edges than in the reference
In retrospect, since Iām so accustomed to realism, I think I shouldāve simplified this a little more but you get the point
Iāll upload the finished result when I get back home
this looking more real than the refrence bro good job lmao
Thanks a lot for the compliment lol but if this looks more ārealā than the reference I guess I failed lol š . Iāll try my best to simplify it a lil more once finished
you got any videos or anything on how to shade like you do? does it take lots of time?
I have like one reel on my instagram that kind of shows how I shade. But it doesnāt take much time since I use blending stumps.
ah, I use my finger to blend lol
Blending stumps automatically makes things smooth
That used to be me
can you send that video?
dang I can't even draw a realistic nose
wait lemme rephrase that
My brain ain't braining rn srry
Fingers take a while. Blending stumps also come in a variety of sizes. I would highly recommend buying blending stumps
I cant even draw a nose
Of course you can !!!! Iāll help you bro. Maybe youāre approaching it incorrectly.
Most artists wonāt agree with me on this but⦠I freehand faces. I donāt use the loomis method because I find it TOO confusing and complicated.
damn I'm like the complete opposite, I tend to overcompicate things lol
what's the loomis method
I actually drew this same exact refrence before, which Is why I opened this
Thatās the opposite of what art should be. What I do is that I use my instinct
I get an idea of proportions. How big something is compared to the rest
I create my own units while drawing
I see lol. Iāll complete this portrait and send it here.
Dude that already looks so cool
dang how are yall so good lol
Shade that and send it ASAP
alright Ill try my best itll probably take a while though
Actually, buy blending stumps before completing it if you can
I highly recommend using those
oh alright
Just a heads up, those work REALLY well with charcoal. More so than with only pencils
how can yall draw lips and noses
I just like to break down everything I see in refrences to 3D shapes
I find noses easy. Lips can be quite challenging
Hold on
Noses are really fun to draw for some reason lol
alr
especially complex and bigger ones
is animation considered art
This right here is the perfect example. Since @shrewd badger wanted a more simplistic style, this outline over here kind of demonstrates that. See how my lip is just a bunch of lines and triangles? Draw the basic shapes. From there you can smooth it out/ modify if you want it to look more real.
Of course !!!!
For sure bro. I hope they donāt take it down since it might be considered as self promo
Drawing a Rainy Street in Kolkata with Charcoal Pencil. I kind of rushed this drawing towards the end lol.

Thatās the only one that kind of shows me using blending stumps of different sizes
wow, you drew messi too, one of my favorite players lol
Thanks for your help bro, really appreciate it
No problem!!!!
Hereās an attempt at trying to simplify the portrait. There are some issues of course but the key takeaway is trying to get the proportions and contrast right @shrewd badger
Thanks for the advise and WOW that looks so much better compared to mine!!!
