Im working on a piece right now, and I'm trying to convey the feeling of loss in battle, of defeat and death, and I can't get the expression quite right. I know, I know, it was probably a terrible idea to render out the skin before rendering the hair, but I've been working on this for a few hours, so its a little late for that haha...
anyway, are there any other tips or ideas this could use? I'm open for critique!

I mean, that's some heavy emotions you wanna convey :0
My first instinct would he to portray a gutteral scream XD
But man you're on the right track with the face, if you want something more intense, shrinking the pupil and scrunching up the face more could help.
You've already drawn those wrinkles on her nose, but make it more B)
I'll find some refs for what I mean in a sec
Ah, thank you!
Just wanted to show how you can go a lot of different routes for this kinda expression.
Depends on what you want :)
You could exaggerate the squish and show the tension and strain in the face, or you could widen the eye, go for a more exhausted and defeated look :0
I also think the eye might be a bit lower on the face?
And fun fact :D
Eyes drawn from the side will have their pupils to the back of the iris
And the pupil will be more of an elipse
Ahh, perfect. I completely forgot about the iris thing. @errant idol thanks for the advise, this is just what I needed :D
here's the progress :)
Hello! You may want to add some wrinkles to the face, if that helps. You can also play around with the shape of the eyebrows (unless you want to go for realism, then don't do this!) For the mouth, there are certain combinations of turns in angle that could further convey agony. I drew an example to visualize it!
I hope this is useful. Good luck!
thank you so much! I'll definitely impliment that into my piece :)
