What makes you say this is a weak drawing? Is it the subject, the interest, composition, edges, etc.. ?
If you can't pinpoint it feel free to include references of paintings similar to yours (or ones you've done in the past) that you find are far stronger than this and note the differences.

Try to put more detail into the shadow shapes to make the plane changes of the face clearer. Rn it all melts together and is hard to read. Also maybe exaggerate the core shadows directly at the light to sell form on the forehead, left eyelid and chin. And lastly maybe some harder edges where the skull is near to the hair but thats kinda a choice of style. Yea but the most important one is to seperate planes by shading

its really hard to go for any bold shadows because the ref is really soft/ambient lighting

Not rlly as long as you seperate them properly. Only thing you have to remember is that that the lightest shadow needs to be clearly darker then the darkest light

use charcoal powder with a paint brush for that smooth affect, thats my method
