hello, I started drawing 11 days ago and I was watching a ton of tutorials and step by steps but I felt like I couldn't apply what I learned on paper, my drawings looked completely off even though I followed step by step of what was shown in the tutorial, the last couple of days I have been drawing from reference and I feel like I'm improving bit by bit, is this sense of accomplishment false? since I'm essentially copying what I'm seeing or could I apply the things I draw from reference to my original work? this is the first time I ever tried sketching more than just the head and I feel like it turned out fine imo but I also feel like it's kind of cheating.

how should I learn going forward and is this practice healthy for me to improve as an artist? I would appreciate any help and insights on this matter.

I think you're improving already, the drawing looks very well done for your experience and I think you're doing a good job. My only advice is to draw less from reference and study techniques and anatomy itself more, whether that's real life human proportions or shapes to sketch out people. But you're doing great so far i think, keep it up!

Well you're already better than my 1 year of drawing skills and you can probably just change some parts of it or improve it,.

You just should focus on parts you think is wrong and improve until you think it's good enough.

Drawing exactly what the reference is is great also you should start tracing too not the kind where you draw every detail, but the one where you trace the shapes that make the overall piece then try to imitate it

Also just start drawing 3 dimensional boxes and other shapes it’ll help tremendously

I don't do that
