this looks like its inbetween the two styles to me. serious, yet stylistic
the one on the right had more vibrant colors, bigger eyes, smaller nose and less messy hair. which killed the mood and the serious character i think you were trying to give him

i agree that it's probably because the character fits the style, while the new one is more baby faced. it's fine to experiment with styles and switch things up :) i do occasional chibis and i'm trying to experiment with more anime like styles despite my style being typical more semi realistic ^^ you don't need to choose a set style and only draw in that one style.
honestly, a lot of artists DO have more than one style depending on the type of art. :) no need to hold yourself down to one style. just have fun.
