Pages Custom Domains create the linking necessary for it to work. You can think of it as Pages has an allowlist of hostnames, and you need to add all hostnames which will be pointing to it, to it
Pretty much every service that offers Custom Domains requires this, although some hide the difference between apex and www (or add both at the same time automagically)

Ah cheers, for context I had a cname configured to point to a custom domain thinking it would work just based on DNS
