I bought an iPod classic 1st gen off of eBay untested, and although it turns on as in shows apple logo and then goes to folder icon it makes this really weird continous beeping noise, not like the beep beep for low power but a continous noise. It goes away after about 10 seconds to when the device attemps to boot, but then goes to the folder icon. I swapped the drive with a known good drive but still shows the folder, and it doesn't show up in iTunes or on the finder of my mac. Does anyone have any ideas?

after boot looping a few times when it is plugged into teh computer it just bricks and won't even restart when I try the combination, doesn't do that on normal power for some reason
If there is a difference between battery and firewire power it could suggest issues with the battery as well.
But the beep noise confuses me - does it come from the beeper? or some other part of the ipod?
can you record that?
Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I’m out of town right now, but I did test it with no hard drive and no battery, and it still made the beeping noise so definitely coming from some part attached to the board. It starts to beep as soon as connected to power, even if I just reconnect the battery. I’ll make sure to record it and get back to you once I’m home.
OK, this confirms issue is beyond the HDD. Here is gets more complex, as we need to identify the source - the microspeaker or stuff like power circuitry.
Anyway any repeir (apart from obvious stuff like shorts and mechanical damage) might require knowledge and soldering stuff.
Here’s a video of what that sound is
