Hello, I have an unmodded 160GB iPod Classic 7th Gen I bought in mid-2010 and heaven knows it’s seen a lot over the years. However, it’s had some major problems in the past month or so and I cannot do much with it anymore. Those problems include:

  1. The iPod has no content on it that I can view on the device itself, yet it says theirs 0kb left. (3rd time it has happened too!)
  2. Plugging it into my computer, it just shows up as a USB drive, nothing more.
  3. When going to “This PC”, it loads for seemingly forever.
  4. Clicking on the drive for the iPod in "This PC" won’t do anything for a long time, but when it does, it says please insert the drive. (something to that effect anyhow)
  5. When I click on iTunes, it will often take a long time to come up when it’s connected and if it’s already up when I plug it in, it will hang. Then when I disconnect it, iTunes comes up instantly regardless if I click it or not. (and no I am not using the Windows Store version of iTunes)
  6. The times I do get iTunes to come up with it connected, my iPod doesn’t show up anywhere. Curiously, it at the very least knows it’s there because when connecting it, it asked me to download iPod support recently.
  7. Attempting to format it with Windows or EaseUS Partition Master not only takes a VERY long for the dialogue to come up so I can begin the process, but it fails every time it tries to format it.
  8. When right-clicking on “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” while the iPod is connected, it takes a VERY long time to come up.
  9. When attempting to play one of the games on the iPod, it will load the game up for a few seconds and then the iPod will reset itself.
  10. If I change settings like having the backlight always on and such, my iPod never remembers them and will operate the same regardless. (apart from brightness anyhow) And adding to #9, it will say I have never played any games, even if I have.
  11. Booting into disc mode doesn’t seem to change anything I mentioned above.

Apologies for the double post, but I hit the text limit. I am sure I may have forgotten some things, but that’s about everything wrong with my device I can think of. Naturally, I have already done research on this and I don’t remember where I read this, but I read this is a sign that the drive is failing. The big question is…

Is the drive failing or is something else going wrong here? Although I am pretty certain this is the issue, I really need confirmation on this just to be safe because I recently opened it with the intention of modding it and the last thing I want is to spend a fortune on parts only to find out the issue isn’t what I thought it was.

If theirs anything else ya'll need to know, feel free to ask. I have my device sitting right next to me.

I'll provide some simple diagnostics for you.
Open the diagnostics menu by pressing menu + prev. track upon startup. Obviously, menu + center is hard reset if you need to try again.
Head to the SMART data and see what it looks like.
The statistics you don't want high numbers on are reallocs and pending sectors.
If there's lots on pending, your drive is failing and it requires replacing.

Hope this helps in any way.

Ah yes, thanks for the tip! I recently remembered that menu and wondered what I could do with it.

Saturday’s are a very busy day for me, so it may be a while before I can post about it here, but I will later today.

yeah you need to replace it

#

11,440 reallocated sectors

#

your drive is currently failing so it's a good thing you didn't leave it until it was too late

#

now that you know, you can source the parts and be ready to replace it
