#5th gen iPod Video charges and can be controlled by a dock, but USB does not work

what dock is it? My theory is that the USB pins on the connector of the iPod are damaged (or the USB system on the board is damaged) and the reason it works on the dock is because some docks use FireWire (uses different pins on the connector) instead of USB.
The dock is just built into a radio I have. It doesn't do anything but playback and control. I was suspecting that it had to be something wrong with the USB circuitry, but I'm just not sure what would have happened since it was working fine until like 40 minutes ago
I did plug it into my car radio to see how it would work and it didn't seem to do anything, but I'm not sure if it broke just before that or if that was the cause
Ok. One way you might be able to verify that the iPod is charging via FW in the dock is by going into diagnostic mode and looking for the FireWire test. You could also try the USB test while plugged into USB. I don’t know the exact locations of these tests in the diagnostic menu because I don’t have my 5th gen with me right now. You can probably find them after some digging.
Ahh, I actually wrote my first message in a bit of a misleading way. Charging via USB does work, but actual data transfer does not
ooooh
that changes things
hmm
when you plug the iPod into your PC, does the iPod show the “Do not disconnect” screen?
No, and the USB device does not show up in lsusb on my computer
I think it still could be an issue with the pins on the connector, since different pins are used for charging VS data transfer. Was the car radio cable in poor condition? Only thing that I can think of was maybe if it’s not used often it may have been damaged and then damaged the pins on the Pod. Just a theory though. Can you see any damage to the pins on the iPod?
I don't see any physical damage, it's the same cable I was using to connect it to my computer (which is probably not actually the correct cable for that car radio, but another car I have said that you could use a normal USB cable so I was curious if that one could as well)
I suppose I could actually check continuity to the logic board from the USB pins, I'm not exactly sure where USB would be exposed on the board though
anyway I’ve got exams tomorrow and have to sleep, good luck with it , sorry I couldn’t be of help
Thanks anyway, good luck on your exams!
I have that same issue
I have a really old charger that’s very stiff and hard to put into the port
