Arts Damages is calculated by (Original Damage * (1 - RES)) meaning it doesn't really matter how how low the Operator's Attack is if they have the Attack Speed to compensate (since it'll always be reduced by the RES percentage).

I can see they have now defense but that doesn’t seem to matter in the slightest because they still won’t die even if I swarm them with units that do physical damage or whatever this game calls it

Not even done with chapter 2 yet and it’s still the hardest gacha game I’ve ever played
