Fang, Beagle and Noir are fine for defenders for now since they're low investment, specter-sash-mountain, silence-hibiscus (sometimes you need double medic), kroos-kroos2 (both are like, best snipers for their stars and they'll cover air problems), and last two can go between tequila and steward-lava
That's what I'd go for if I were you tbh. Biased opinion, I'd add Beanstalk too since she's like my go-to 4 star vg for is mode lol, but you're better building myrtle once you get her

Limited banner exclusive mechanic. You get one "Spark" per pull. If you do 300 pulls you can spend your "spark" to buy any limited unit you want.

300 pulls is "worth" 4 operators, so spending 300 to get one older unit isn't a great use of resources. Not to mention earning 300 pulls as F2P will cost you MANY months of saving or most of the free OP you get doing story maps.
