You should probably focus on wisadel, exu2, lemon, Ines, ascalon, ray, yu, reedic, chong, ptilopsis and blazealt probably in that order. That'd give you a decent team core to build out from. Just focus on getting specialization on all their best skills and working up their masteries and modules and you'll nuke most content easily

Having played most gatcha and a ton of tower defense games, I think it's one of the most forgiving games for new players that exists. You can genuinely get by most content with free ops and the event rewards and you'll do just fine. It's also got some of the best rates and easiest pulls if you do want to spend money on it. Very forgiving and very fun to dig into the strategy of the game.

Purely IS tho, trag is at a weird spot in IS5, he's very powerful, meta shaking, but in lamp comps he does take up a wish node which delays your progress, he's pretty broken in talons mainly as a starter to skip the early game and provide stalling as an alternative win con in the endings. In IS6, he's your ideal low diff carry that gets you to high diff very easily. Still, on the absolute highest level of difficulty, he falls short due to the more challenging bosses not caring as much about his capabilities, so he basically falls short on higher difficulties.

Leizi has solid performance in IS5 (I parrot this, as I never tried her in 5) as a Guard/Vanguard-specific pick and is also one of the best IS6 Guards, benefiting from a number of interactions.

Hoshi Alter, I haven't tried her in IS5, but she's a top defender pick in IS6 and is part of the meta comp (Def-Supp Raidian start) as a good second carry to provide early power.
