missing texture guy is right, the index is still worth it in 2023, and dont worry about the new valve headset cause really there is no official announcements for release dates, and even if they do announce it; will likely be a year or two away anyway.

i personally havent used the index but i have heard from others and know people who have used it, they all say it is better in experience (experience is more important than raw numbers, just having better numbers doesnt instantly mean better headset), though yes it is 4 years old and it lacks in resolution, the lenses make up for that as well as the fov, the screen door effect is apparently minimal on index too so dont worry about that, steam vr lets you super sample headset res anyway so it can be quickly made better. also the quest 2 resolution is across the one display, not two (meaning parts of the screen are actually not able to be seen and waste performance), unlike the index. native steam vr is also just better than oculus.

outside tracking is better than inside tracking, way more precise though at a hefty cost, it also allows for simple fbt additions in future, as well as more enthusiast type items if you got that much cash lying around. it is worth the investment if you know for 100% that you will get into pcvr, if you dont know about how often you will play then get the quest 2, dont spend all that cash to not use it. the controllers are probably one of the best selling points for the headset, the index controllers are so much better, infact im even ordering my own set right now, the full finger tracking is a very great bonus, yes it may not work in all games but in the ones it does work it will make all the difference in immersion. the index however does have its issues like heating, invest in a fan and remove the plastic cover on the front, it will be way better. i would avoid used, build quality aint great on this headset lol, index is well known for breaking easily, even on arrival.

If I am allowed to throw my hat into the ring, I would say that I was in the same boat as the OP but with less money. I was pondering on getting a ***used ***valve index for my birthday but decided that it was not worth because getting a whole new one is really expensive, even though I could probably work for a few more months to get it, due to the reports of breakages and also since I am moving soon I don't really want to set up base stations to then remove them. Well if you already have a pc to use an index don't get a index get a quest and get the link cable (or airlink if you prefer it) and get usefull accessories like pro strap and change audio maybe controller grips and you will get a better vr experience than using a very heavy headset (just make sure you change out that headstrap)

Honestly idk, but I do know the quest resolution is actually compressed on both link methods. So even if the index has lower res displays, your image is going to look better anyway since the index won't have any compression.

That is probably due to your adjustments of any headstrap you use or you are just quite weak to blue light so you might want to invest in some blue light filters for your lenses but first try adjusting your headstrap to see if that's what's causing your eye and head pain
