Generally I recommend newbies to adopt a much stricter saving scheme to avoid headaches over the first few months of the game. After which they can loosen up and then pull for what they want or keep saving.

a) don't stress over getting what you want

and b) if you don't have every broken unit you learn how the gen pool units work

and you learn to build really good teams around what you do have
