For me, the most difficult thing when starting out is still sync orbs... especially now with legendary adventures and grids for 3* 4* units, there's plenty good units but not enough sync orbs at the start

I know personally I pulled for mallow's spotlight pair when she first dropped because I liked her a lot in the anime, then realized that just because I liked her in the anime, it didn't mean that I liked her game personality and was kinda disappointed. Pokémas writing is based off of the games, so I think if you like a character because of the anime/manga, it's important to take a step back, see how they're handled in games, and see if you still like that characterization of them. or else you might end up disappointed
