The emergency found could be one pity or more, some people like to have as many saved pities as faves, but ofc it’s hard

Further criteria for a trainer would be aesthetic ones, so if an alt doesn’t fit them, you’d be less inclined to pull
For example, you may really like Eusine, but maybe the idea of him in a seasonal outfit like the ones during Christmas and Summer doesn’t sit well with you

Rank your trainers and Pokémon accordingly and you should be good to go, imho. To establish an order within tiers, factors like esthetic appeal and power should be your criteria

While we do generally advise to not pull unless you're willing to spend a full pity on the banner, there's no shame in doing a few pulls, realizing it's not worth it, and stopping before you spend even more gems. I think it's commendable for someone to realize a unit isn't worth it and stop pulling, rather than give into sunk cost fallacy and keep pulling just because they already started.
