can't speak for everyone, but it's mostly because of the fact that not everyone is capable of skipping favs when they first come around and fomo increased when multiple favs pops out

that situation happens to me during the month of August and September when 5 MF, all my favs and 3 hoenn va units just dropped hard

personally, I would pick the top 3 for the month, and skip the rest and try spending gems below the gem count line as much as possible

If you're talking about solely is there any other way to hand-pick a specific sync pair, the answer is only through special tickets that you acquire from events, the Champion Stadium Introduction that gives you a Kantrio pick, through Seasonal Step-Up Sync Pairs (Cost can be up to 22,000 Paid Gems), and from Choice Banners (with costs between 3,000 to 5,000 Paid Gems).

Well I guess it boils down to on what you consider to be a worthwhile unit, or if you can identify if you have needs vs wants in the game

Because the game has very limited challenges within it (Champion Stadium, Extreme Battles, Legendary Gauntlet), it's easy to define what it is you might need next, as the other events, modes, and challenges in the game (Story Events, Prize Box Events, Map Events) are very passable with casual play and stamina focus

In Pokemon Masters, I define a "need" to be the necessary, bottom-line tool for clearing a part of the game's content or mission.

An example would be that you need at least 3 Galar sync pairs in this game to clear Galar-based Sync Pair Missions

In general, what I found to work was to save for Unova canon pairs

The Meta can be broken down to where it "depends" on what mode of the game you're looking at;

Current modes we have done in Pokemon Masters:
🏰 Battle Villa (Endurance Climb)

The Meta for Battle Villa are Sync Pairs that self-refresh and create advantages at no-cost actions, like Sycamore & Xerneas' Sync Move which provide a team-wide +6 buff to Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed.
🗻 Legendary Arena/Gauntlet (Boss Mode)
The Meta for Legendary Gauntlet, and to an extent Arena, focuses on Tech Sync Pairs that cause disruption and interference - Flinching, Status Effects, Debuffing, and more.
🏟️ Champion Stadium (Challenge Mode)
For the most part, the Meta of Champion Stadium has a huge variance on your roster. You don't necessarily need to focus on Type Weakness Advantage if you know the strengths of your existing Sync Pairs. This is the biggest "It Depends™️" mode in an answer for what the Meta is.
💥 Extreme Battles (Lunatic+ Difficulty)
Funny enough, the Meta is reduced as Extreme Battles focus heavily on your roster being on-type and on-theme for its event duration.
