#Summer 2023 Internship

shhh

ur ok
also, ur a sophomore, so it’s harder to get call backs
u go to a good school
but it’s also pretty late in the application period
so it’s even harder
i apply as junior lol, got 1 final round + few oas, hirevues etc.
but i want to know if there's anything wrong with the resume
tbh i think you’ll have more luck if u apply early
are you also a uiuc kid
no 😹 but ur experience locations are in IL, and uchicago has no engineering school, and NU has a long engineering school name
kinda pieces the puzzle together
i regret my decisions, found out internships mattered quite late and sent out 150 after october end
yeah that’s somewhat late
but hopefully there is still a sizeable spring wave
so nothing wrong with resume just date of apply??
maybe
i havent read through every word but immediately I dont see anything wrong with the wording and experiences, so not much you can change immediately.
other than some minor qualms i have with that last extra line after relevant skills, looks strange
projects look fine, experience is alright considering you're just a first year (aug 22 start) which is the main thing working against you
you'll have a high response rate next year but not much you can do as a first year other than just keep applying
do they look at start yr or grad?
considering you go to a t5, make sure to check whether your school has an internal jobs listing
what is an internal job
most likely grad year, but i'm coming at this from the perspective that you're a freshman
ie. something like waterlooworks or whatever for your school
worst case you should also apply for REUs, just incase you get nothing for SWE intern
Haha the divider?
Will do
Applying as Dec 2024 grad
Ik, unfortunately thats the case, I got a lot of credit
i mean if it's realistic then go ahead
Should I change to 25 and would that hurt
i dont think it matters realistically because all the freshman internships are long full or closed. do whichever one is more realistic for you
only real piece of advice i can give is that if you don't have monetary reasons to speedrun college, dont. make some friends, get to know people, etc
theres no point in squeezing an extra year out of it. you're young, and you probably have like 60 years left to live on average. enjoy your life
now if you wanted to do grad school or something of that sort, i could see the benefit in going quicker since you're gonna be in an academic environment either way
Agree there, but I have uiuc +1 program which in a way rushes me a year, it'll be like 2.5/3 yrs undergrad + 1 master
ah so its a BS+MS program, makes sense
Unfortunately no such thing besides ta
I will try reus
i didnt mean school jobs, i meant like an indeed for people in the school system
waterlooworks is a site for waterloo students to find co-ops (i don't go to waterloo, but its the most obvious example)
ic
but yeah just apply to whatever open REUs you find, see if any profs are doing research and ask if you can help, etc.
im sure uiuc has a plethora of resources regarding that kind of stuff seeing how much research comes out of there
Yeah fs, research is a good option but also can be competitive since a lot of ppl at uiuc
I just wish an easy internship existed
unfortunately, it did exist and it filled up in 2 months (capital one)
not applying early is a massive boon
keep your eyes peeled starting july/june
So I assume I can quit for 2023?
???
when did i every say that
you have so many resources you may be glossing over
use them
i think research is a great idea to strive for this year, but you should still go for internships. stuff opens up here and there
imo you should do research because it's a new experience to do something cool over the summer that's a very different environment to a normal internship as a SWE
not because you gave up on finding internships
ie. to try something new
you'll learn more than you expect and you'll get to know a professor very well
My fermilab was a research internship for 2 yrs I just put as intern haha
But yeah I genuinely want to do ml research
Or qc but I can't get that
in that case an REU or other research internship is what you should be going to anyways lol
start applying asap
a lot of them have deadlines going soon
👍
