#Help me choose between civil engineering / software engineering

More job opportunity in software engineering compared to civil engineering plus its easier to transition into something like computer science since you already have experience with software engineering. But ultimately i recommend you have a look at the uni syllabus for each engineering course and seeing which you like best.
If your leaning towards software engineering and not sure if you'll like it then i recommend you ask c_osmo (the blue mod as he majors in software engineering).
.
cosmos there should be a "career advice" and a "ib-a level help" helper role
cos why not!
We already have specific IGCSE/A Level/IB Helper roles so I don’t see the need for one. Regarding the Career Advice helper role, I’m not sure but you can always suggest it using /feedback
Thank you btw!

Software & Informatics Engineering opens up tons of doors for you, but the degree in itself is usually hard, be prepared for that. Take a very good look at the course structure and know what you’re getting yourself into.
The whole “AI is taking over” debate is pretty stupid for the moment, AI is not coming for most software engineering jobs other than design related, such as frontend web development, because currently the basic AI models we have access to generate slop in terms of anything backend or security related. Furthermore, the thing people fail to realise is that CS is not just Software Development, there are so many fields that you can go into from a CS bachelors degree, some of which do require a Masters degree just due to the specialisation, but it’s worth it IMO
AI is definitely going to change CS. Even as someone who generally dislikes the use of AI, I can’t deny that it will change CS. As long as you use it just as a productivity tool, and not to generate your code/essays, you should be fine. Don’t give in to the vibe coder aspect, but know how to use it to your advantage.
Software & Informatics Engineering is slightly different than what I study, since it’s classified as an engineering degree rather than a Science, so even though the bigger picture is the same (CS) the modules may look slightly different, so prepare yourself for a lot more theory and a lot more math. CS in general is not about coding, realistically you’ll spend very little doing code, if you want to have a future in this, you’ll have to do projects outside of your uni syllabus that actually matter. Don’t make AI Slop or NPC projects like the next weather app. Everyone’s made a weather app. Everyone can make a ChatGPT wrapper, be unique (but being unique is very hard)
Some of the other fields that you can go into from CS are
Quantum Computing (requires physics to an extent)
Bioinformatics (requires biology)
Cybersecurity (so much math)
Game Development
Cloud Computing
Machine Learning & AI (requires so much math)
Internet of Things (smart devices)
..and a lot more, these are just what I remembered off the top of my head
cosmos this is why you are my favourite mod

same with my uncle aunt and her husband
thats js 5 from the top of my head

and my parents work friends and those above are telling me to stay away from civil
i guess we are listening.
im getting all As dude cmon B and Cs 🥀
yes salahaddin
inshallah sarkautu dabi
u too whoever u are 💔
If you want to, sure. CS courses start from the very basics either way, so it won’t really matter too much, you’ll just be ahead the first few weeks
If you genuinely have nothing to do, start CS50
If you have other things to do and you’re only a few months from uni, don’t do CS50, not worth it imo
But if you just want to dip your toes in and see if you like CS then yeah
Thank you!
