Both A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB) are rigorous pre-university programs, but they differ in structure and focus:

  1. A-Levels (AS/A Levels):

    • Structure: Students typically select 3-4 subjects to study in depth.
    • Assessment: Exams-based, with more focus on specialization in fewer subjects.
    • Flexibility: Allows for a more focused approach to specific areas (e.g., sciences or humanities).
    • Duration: 2 years, often broken into AS (first year) and A2 (second year).
  2. IB (International Baccalaureate):

    • Structure: Students study 6 subjects across a broad range (languages, sciences, arts, etc.), alongside core components like the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
    • Assessment: Mix of exams and internal assessments (projects, essays).
    • Breadth: Emphasizes a holistic, broad-based education with mandatory subjects across different areas.
    • Duration: 2 years.

Choosing between them depends on whether you prefer depth in a few subjects (A-Levels) or a broader, more interdisciplinary approach (IB).

Personally, I love the focused & specialist approach of A-Levels, I would go as far to say that A-Levels is a better curriculum and application of said curriculum. IB ends up being quite elitist and I found that pretty annoying. I say this as an IB Alumni ๐Ÿ’€

#

The EE & IAs were cool in IB but the lack of time and having to do 6 subjects where I disliked a few made the experience less than pleasant.

#

I guess I only recommend IB if you have good time mangement skills & a worth ethic
