I myself tried to use outfits as motivation, it worked for a while… (AND I MEAN FOR YEARS) but then burn out set (and crept) in. Your best bet for motivation is to either take it slow or ignore the cosmetics etc. you don’t actually want to aim for.
I have done solo for quite a sizable chunk of my Sky life, and I can tell you seasons and friends are what I was always motivated for.

I have defeated FOMO long ago at this point, but the problem is that most of the time, the game wants you to get cosmetics if you aren’t hanging out with friends.
The whole game revolves around friends, exploration, and cosmetics. Not that that’s bad, sometimes cosmetics have demonstrated to be an ice-breaker… but really it starts to feel like a treadmill that never stops. Sure, you could get off from it at any point, but the game will still try to push you back on it.
I love this game to bits, but it’s hard to ignore that part of it.
