It's pretty much an acquired taste
Like licorice or vegemite for example, not everyone likes them (especially people who hadn't grown up eating those kinds of food since they didn't have time to get used to the taste). It mostly depends on a person's taste buds though

Maybe some genetics may play a role too because some people are more sensitive to smells/taste than others, so the smell of something like durian can be too overwhelming for them
